Publication Open Access An Investigation on The Causes of Low Enrolment in Vocational Centres in Murang'a South District.(Mount Kenya University, 2014-09) Karanja, Patricia NjeriThis study aims at finding out the causes of the low enrolment in vocational training center in Murang’a south district in Murang’a county .The sub county of Murang’a county has 8 vocational centres among which two are private while six are public. Some of the anticipation causes of low enrolment are low altitude high dropout rates inadequate infrastructure unattractive infrastructure. The researcher is out to find out whether these are the true causes. The study will employ the use of descriptive design which involves collection of data in order to test hypothesis or answer question concerning the current status of subject under study. Quantitative and qualitative data collection methods will also be used. The instruments which will be used for data collection will be questionnaire, interview and observation. The questionnaires were administered to the trainees, instructors and management committee members of 3 YPs in the district. The interview schedule was used to interview the principals of the 3 YPs. Observation was also done by the researcher especially on matters pertaining infrastructure, tools, and equipment. According to the findings, the causes of low enrolment were found out to be bad attitude towards YPs by the community, high drop-out rates, inadequate infrastructure and facilities, low development of the institutions making them unattractive as well as demotivation of the instructors. In order to raise the enrolment in the YPs, the researcher recommended that campaigns be conducted to market YPs as well as change the community’s low attitude, the government should ensure these institutions are developed to make them attractive, guidance and counseling programmes for YP trainees to reduce early pregnancies and marriages.
