Publication Open Access Determination Of The Relationship Between Self-Esteem And Delinquency Among Adolescents In Selected Public Rehabilitation Schools In Kenya(Journal Of Humanities And Social Science, 2024-02) Kiugu, Jane K. S.; Karimi, Jane; Olaly, WilfridaDelinquency among adolescents is a social problem which has increased at an alarming rate in Kenya. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between psychosocial variables and delinquency among adolescents in selected public rehabilitation schools, Kenya. The study was informed by two theories: The “ Storm and Stress” Theory and Social Learning Theory. The study adopted mixed research methods approach. Convergent parallel research design was used which was appropriate for mixed methods approach. The target population was three hundred and sixty which comprised of adolescents, managers, teachers and welfare officers from the four selected the public rehabilitation schools. A sample for the study was drawn from the target population of the four selected public rehabilitation schools. The researcher picked the four managers from the target population using convenience sampling, employed stratified random sampling, systematic random sampling and simple random sampling to select adolescents, teachers and welfare officers as respondents drawn from the target population. A sample size of two hundred and seventy-one respondents was obtained from the target population. The research instruments used for collecting data were questionnaires administered to the adolescents and teachers and interview schedule which were administered to the managers and welfare officers. Reliability of the research instruments was achieved through a pilot study in which Cronbach’s Coefficient Alpha values were above 0.7 which indicated that the instruments were reliable for the study. Multiple linear regression analysis on data for self -esteem indicated positive correlation coefficient (R) 0.826 which showed positive correlation between self-esteem and delinquency. ANOVA analysis indicated coefficient value of 0.000 which was less than p<0.05 which indicated statistically significant relationship between self- esteem and delinquency. The findings will help rehabilitation schools’ management, teachers, probation officers in policy formulation to strengthen rehabilitation process. The findings will be useful to counselling psychologists, clinical psychologists, mental health practictioners in helping adolescent delinquents and care givers during rehabilitation and after exit.Publication Open Access Determination Of The Relationship Between Stress Levels And Delinquency Among Adolescents In Selected Public Rehabilitation Schools In Kenya(Journal Of Humanities And Social Science, 2024-02) Kiugu, Jane K. S.; Karimi, Jane; Olaly, WilfridaAdolescent delinquency in Kenya has become a pressing social issue, showing a concerning increase. This study aimed to explore the connection between psychosocial factors and delinquency among adolescents in selected public rehabilitation schools in Kenya, drawing insights from the "Storm and Stress" Theory and Social Learning Theory. Employing a mixed research methods approach, the study utilized a convergent parallel research design, fitting for a mixed methods approach. The target population consisted of 360 individuals, including adolescents, managers, teachers, and welfare officers from four chosen public rehabilitation schools. Sampling involved a combination of convenience, stratified random, systematic random, and simple random sampling methods to select 271 respondents, comprising adolescents, teachers, and welfare officers. Questionnaires were administered to adolescents and teachers, while managers and welfare officers underwent interviews. The research instruments demonstrated reliability through a pilot study, revealing Cronbach’s Coefficient Alpha values above 0.7. ANOVA analysis indicated F value 0.065, p< 0.05 which was less than the F table value 0.99993. This showed statistically significant relationship between stress levels and delinquency. Findings revealed that the adolescents had mental issues which impacted negatively on their behaviour. These findings hold valuable implications for rehabilitation schools' management, teachers, and probation officers, aiding in policy formulation to enhance the rehabilitation process. Moreover, counseling psychologists, clinical psychologists, and mental health practitioners can benefit from these findings in supporting adolescent delinquents and caregivers during rehabilitation and post-exit.Publication Open Access Relationship between psychosocial variables and delinquency among adolescents in selected public rehabilitation schools in Kenya(Mount Kenya University, 2024-03) Kiugu, Jane K. S.Teenage delinquency is a growing problem in Kenya and a major issue for society as a whole. Examining selected Kenyan public rehabilitation centers, this research seeks to understand the relationship between psychological variables and juvenile criminality. The study used a mixed-methods approach, drawing from both the "Storm and Stress" Theory and Social Learning Theory. In particular, we choose a convergent parallel research strategy because we think it will work well with our approach. At four specific public rehabilitation schools, 360 people—including students, administrators, instructors, and welfare officers—will be part of the target group. A total of 271 responders are chosen at random from this pool. While convenience sampling is used to pick managers, stratified random sampling, systematic random sample, and basic random sampling are used to select teachers, teenagers, and welfare officials, respectively. Managers and welfare officials conduct interviews and provide questionnaires to educators and students. A pilot study verifies the dependability of research instruments by producing Cronbach's Coefficient Alpha values higher than 0.7, indicating reliability. Asking supervisors for their professional views is another way to guarantee veracity. We use SPSS 25.0, a Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, to do quantitative data analysis using descriptive and inferential statistics. In order to examine qualitative data in a way that was consistent with ethical issues, thematic analysis was used. During the indicated time, the demographic data showed that there were more male adolescents (65.7%) than female adolescents (34.3%) in these correctional facilities. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) confirmed the existence of a statistically significant association between delinquency and self-esteem, which was shown to have a positive correlation coefficient (R) of 0.826. Some teenagers had healthy amounts of self-esteem, whereas others didn't. In a similar vein, between stress levels and delinquency, there was a positive correlation (R = 0.07) and ANOVA analysis confirmed a statistically significant link (F = 0.065, p < 0.05). Results for all parameters in the one-sample t-test analysis of the family structure data were 0.000, suggesting statistical significance. The ANOVA analysis confirmed a statistically significant link (F value 0.025, p < 0.05) between impulsivity and delinquency, which was backed by a high positive correlation (R value of 0.77). These results are useful for probation officers, instructors, and administrators of rehabilitation schools when making policy decisions to improve the rehabilitation process. Counselors, clinical psychologists, adolescents, and probation officers may all benefit greatly from their ideas as they assist rehabilitating and reintegrating formerly incarcerated youth.
