    Contribution of Church Sponsors To Mobilization And Utilization Of Resources in Public Secondary Schools in Mwingi Central District, Kitui County, Kenya

    This research study investigated the contribution of Church Sponsors to mobilization and utilization of resources in Public Secondary Schools in Mwingi Central District Kenya. It investigated the following: the main church sponsors of public secondary school, the type and source of resources acquired from stakeholders of public secondary schools, the proportion of educational resources contributed by church sponsors and the level of accountability in church sponsored public secondary schools.The findings of the study may help the church sponsors, Ministry of Education, the government, local communities and school administrators with the knowledge, facts and strategies that are required in order to effectively mobilize and utilize educational resources.The study was guided by the structural functionalism theory by Talcott.The study targeted all the 28 church sponsored schools in the district. A total of 39 respondents were involved in the study comprising 10 principals, 22 BOG representatives and 7 church sponsors. The study employed a descriptive survey design and made use of both qualitative and quantitative approaches to collect information from relevant respondents. Three instruments were developed which included an interview schedule for school principals and questionnaires, one for BOG representatives and another for church sponsor representatives. Piloting was done in the same district. The instruments were subjected to analysis by a team of experts in educational management.The instruments were tested at 0.70 level. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze qualitative data while quantitative. pie charts, frequency tables and bar graphs and conclusions drawn to establish the relationship between the variables.The research revealed the main sponsors of public schools were AIC 43.5 percent followed by catholic 25.6percent ABC 23percent and APC 7.7 percent. The main providers of educational resources were the government 41.2 percent followed by parents 27.9 percent, CDF/LATF 10.3 percent, well-wishers 8.8 percent, PTA 5.9 percent and lastly sponsor contribution 2.9 percent. From the findings the proportion of educational resources provided by the church was negligible reported by 60 percent of the respondents. The study found out that there were no proper mechanisms to ensure accountability in the schools that they sponsor. From the findings recommended that the church sponsors role should be clearly redefined to ensure that they play an active role in ensuring a smooth running of the schools. The researcher further recommended that church sponsors should redefine their roles and operate within their scope and also hire their independent auditors and monitors. Suggestion for further studies is on the role played by individual churches in the schools they sponsor. In addition, establish the role played by individual churches on academic performance in schools they sponsor.
