The Effects of HIV/ Aids On Academic Perfomance in Education Sector in Yatta Division, Machakos County

Abstract

HIV/AIDs have been a worldwide threat and disaster. It has affected both economic development and academic performance in schools. The research was done in Yatta division,MachakosCounty. The major objectives of the study were to find out the effects of HIV/ AIDs in academic performance and the factors leading to the effects of HIV/ AIDS in academics. The research was done by use of questionnaires for teachers and students; also there was use of interviews for both. Small groups were sampled to give responses to the questionnaires and interviews. The researcher selected Yatta division only to represent the many schools in Machakos County. The results which were found in all the schools were summarized in tables and pie charts. The questionnaires was set in such a way that the respondents chose ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ to respond to any question. The researcher found that many learners and teachers are infected or affected by HIV/ AIDS in the region. He also found that if any, there is little government intervention in HIV/ AIDS reduction. The researcher thereforerecommends for government intervention on the phenomena of HIV/ AIDS to reduce its effects in academics. The research foundthe number of people infected with HIV/ AIDS in Yatta division. Tables and pie charts were used to show the responses of the students and teachers on HIV/ AIDS and their effects in academics.
