An investigation on the low enrollment of girls in Secondary schools in Moyale, Marsabit county.

Education plays a major role in the advancement of socio-economic development around the world. Education, especially female primary education helps reduce poverty by increasing the productivity of the poor and by equipping people with the skills they need to participate fully in society. The study therefore aimed at investigating the factors behind low enrolment of girls in primary schools in Moyale, Marsabit County. The study was guided by the following objectives to find out girls’ school enrolment in primary schools, to establish factors that influence girls’ school enrolment and to identify the schooling challenges facing girls and the solutions of curbing the problems in Moyale. Related literature was considered when carrying out study to compare what previous scholars having dealt on the same subject had found. The researcher used descriptive research design to carry out the study where data was analysed qualitatively. Due to convenience the researcher used a sample size of 45 subjects. The raw data was collected and coded and analyzed using Microsoft Excel software where it was put into frequency tables and percentages and presented using tables, graphs and pie charts for easy interpretations. After discussion the study found out that girls were not considered for education as compared to boys. Some religions hold some cultures and doctrines that prohibit education for girls. Due to low economic status, many parents were not able to enroll all their children to school and so preferred boys. There was no role model to emulate, a factor that most influence girls school enrolment and so labour demand at home kept them out of school
