The impact of drugs and substance abuse to learners performance in secondary schools in Makueni District, Makueni county

Abstract

The purpose of writing this project was to find out the impact of drugs and substance abuse to learners performance in secondary schools in Makueni district,Makueni County. The objectives of the study were; To identify some of the causes of drug and substance abuse to learners in secondary schools in Makueni district Makueni county,To investigate on the effects of drug and substance abuse to learners in secondary schools in Makueni district Makueni county,To identify ways of preventing drug and substance abuse to learners in secondary schools in Makueni district Makueni county and to find out the challenges faced by teachers handling learners who have abused drugs. The objectives were translated into research questions. The study will be of importance to the Government, the ministry of education in implementing the curriculum, the policy makers when formulating policies, teachers so that they may have a knowledge on how to deal with learners affected by drug and substance abuse and to the parents who have these learners. Descriptive Survey design was applied in collecting data. Questionnaires were used as research instrument because of time factor with the target population of 30 schools where 15 schools were sampled. Populations of 4 teachers from each school were sampled for the study. Closed and open ended questions were used and later data analyzed and presented inform of frequency tables. Findings and recommendations of the study were shared with relevant stakeholders
