An assessment of the management of k.c.s.e examinations and its influence or irregularities among students in secondary schools a case study of Mwala district in Machakos county

Abstract

Examination irregularities at the global , region and local level have emerged as a major concern for the educationist and society at large. Several strategies to tackle these problems have been considered including the use of law to discourage malpractices in Examinations. The underlying objective of this study will be to assess National Examination Irregularities in Kenya certificates of secondary Education (K.C.S.E) in Mwala District, Machakos county . The study will attempt to investigate the extend to which malpractices in KCSE examinations has been attributed to teachers, school administrators, students, parents, supervisors and invigilators . This study will be a descriptive research that will employ a case study research design . The target population of this study will be 33 Secondary schools distributed among the four divisions of Mwala. The sample of the study will comprise of teachers , head teachers , examination officials and form four students in 10 public schools in Mwala District. Data will be collected using questionnaires and interview guides. Using simple descriptive statistics data will be analyzed and results presented in tables of frequency distribution , graphs and charts Mwala is a District in Machakos county geographically located in a rural set up where transport to interior schools will be a major challenge of the study. In addition fear of victimization of respondents especially the students and lack of funds to visit the public schools in the district will also prove to be among the many challenges anticipated during the study. This study will ensure that effective measures should be taken by those in charge of the administration of examinations. The head of schools in primary schools should ensure that proper procedures that discourage cheating are established or strictly followed to inculcate ethical behavior amongst their students. This will limit students from transiting to secondary schools with cheating behaviours
