Abstract
This research project was aimed at investigating the effects of child neglect on social development of secondary school students in Nginda Zone, Murang’a county. The study was guided by the following objectives; to establish the effects of child neglect on social development of secondary school students in Nginda zone Murang’a County, to find out the challenges faced by neglected children in their secondary school age in Nginda Zone Murang’a County, to find out the effects of child neglect on academic performance of secondary school students in Nginda Zone Muranga County and to find out ways of assisting neglected children change their negative attitude. Child abuse and neglect have immediate and long-term consequences. In addition to negatively impacting the child, child abuse and neglect impacts the family, the school community, and even future generations. The researcher design that was used is the survey method simply because it covered a large area. The sample for this study was 30% of 20 secondary schools in the zone. This gave a sample of 6 secondary schools with a combined total of 240 students. The sample was applied in the generalization of the results of the target population. Lottery techniques as a sub – type of random sampling method was used whereby 30% of 20 schools gave a total of 6 secondary schools which was used. The data was analysed and presented in tables graphs and piecharts.
