Abstract
This study sought to find out the impacts of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) on education of public primary schools in Elangata-wuas and Kilonito locations of Kajiado County. The researcher sought to find out among the following; the extent to which FGM has contributed to drop outs of learners, the extent to which FGM has contributed to early marriages of learners, the extent to which FGM has affected performance of learners, the extent to which FGM has contributed to unwanted pregnancies and the extent to which FGM has contributed to loss of lives of learners. The study used the literature review obtained from past and related studies on the topic such as the instance of FGM, the contribution of FGM to learning and the effects of FGM on learners such as deaths, drop outs, infections and psycho social effects. The researcher did not have any influence or manipulation on the respondent and hence ll the information collected was based on their elicited responses in the research instruments. The researcher used three questionnaires that is; for teachers; Head teachers and victims of FGM (pupils). It was well spelled by the research that FGM was still taking place in the community around the school due to the aftermath of the FGM practice, which includes early marriages, poor performance in schools hence resulted in the students demoralization thus resulted in dropping out of school. It came out clearly that the victims of FGM go through a traumatizing period during the practice which installs fear and psychological impairments that cause them to loose self- confidence and lack their personal identity. Moreover they are trained more on motherhood and marriage life to the extent that they no longer value education. FGM is associated with the term “Iyio amu itaa engikot” that is in Maasai community meaning that the victim of FGM are regarded as women and not children any more hence they have the freedom to do that which women do, this has resulted to the unwanted pregnancies since girls start engaging in sexual activities due to the feeling of being grown after FGM. Some girls had also lost their lives during FGM, during the recovery period and others while giving birth which can be attributed to Haemorrhage.
