Abstract

This research work is a finding that investigates the effect of learner’s background to the learning process in primary school in Mwala District, Machakos County. The objective of the study was to investigate the effects of learner’s background to learning process in primary school, to indentify the background factors affecting learning process to learners in primary school and to find out how effects of learner’s background affect their learning process. Government policy in Kenya has for many years encouraged parental involvement in their children’s education. In response, most primary schools have developed a range of strategies designed to assist parents in supporting their children’s learning at home, particularly in learning to read. However, it is a common assumption that parents from some social and ethnic groups are “harder to reach” than others and – indeed – that some are even not interested in their children’s education. Data was collected by use of questionnaires which were closed. Hence, I chose qualitative research as a methodology of this project. Descriptive sampling techniques were adopted and the questionnaire method was used in collecting the data. Data were analysed using tables, bar graphs, line graphs and charts.
