Abstract
The education sector in Kenya and other parts of the world has faced many challenges particularly dropouts. The issue of dropouts has been a major issue amongst many regions and communities in Kenya and this has been mostly witnessed in the rural areas .This study is to determine and analyze the dropout levels of public secondary schools in Malindi district in Kilifi County for the last few years. In this study, the researcher will need to establish the influence of age and gender, parental income, level of education, School management and the size of household on the rate of drop outs in the Malindi region. The study has covered all the secondary schools in Malindi districts in Kilifi county the various factors that did not leave other important education areas where by the researcher has sought to know the various factors that lead to cases of dropout in Malindi district. Data has been collected from heads of schools and guidance and counseling teachers in all the selected Public secondary schools in the district. The study has employed cross sectional research design as a framework for data collection. Primary data on dropout levels has been obtained from the respondents using structured questionnaire. Means, percentages, frequencies, standard Deviations and t-tests has been used to establish internal efficiency levels. Statistical analysis was used using statistical package for social sciences. The study has to Reveal the dropout levels in secondary school and rate of the dropout in different Schools; single stream compared to more than one stream schools. The study will also seek find out if dropout rates Increases with increase in level of education. The findings of the study are expected to benefit the school Managers, the policy implementers and school inspectors, the parents and teachers, as well as the ministry of education in making decisions about school size, school regime and the school type, with respect to factors affecting dropout rates.
