Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to investigate the factors leading to low enrollment of girl child
in schools in Kalacha zone,Chalbi district. Factors leading to low enrollment is neither adequately
investigated nor well understood. This has hindered the development of girl child education in
education in the district. The objective of the study was to examine socio-economic factors that
affect girls’ enrolment in primary education. Socio-cultural factors was also another objective of the
study and to establish school based factors that affect girl’s enrolment in primary education in
Kalacha zone. The study was also to facilitate making recommendations for the improvement of
girls ‘enrolment in primary education.
The researcher used a sample of 240 respondents in the Study which is quite appropriate for good
results using random sampling method. The researcher selected a size of 180 girls, 30 teachers, 20
SMC members 10 head teachers. The head teacher, teachers and the SMCs were selected
purposively (3 class teachers per school each representing class 6, 7 and 8).
The researcher used statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 11.5 to aid in data
analysis. Descriptive statistics involving frequencies and percentages were used to analyze the data.
Each of the following objectives data was presented using frequencies and percentages to examine
socio-economic factors that affect girls’ enrolment in primary school education in Kalacha zone
Chalbi district, to examine socio-cultural factors that affect girls’ enrolment in primary school
education in Kalacha zone Chalbi district and to establish school-based factors that affects girls’
enrolment in primary school education in Kalacha zone Chalbi district.
The researcher concluded that the increase of girl child enrolment in schools and the support and
improvement of female education worldwide especially at the primary level provides benefits to the
family and the society at large. Moreover Recommendations and suggestions for further study were
made.
