Factors influencing drug and substance abuse in selected secondary schools in Vihiga county, Vihiga division

Abstract

This project is forecast on factors influencing drug and substance abuse among secondary school students In Vihiga county, Vihiga division.Both boys and girls were selected for the study this was because all of them are affected by drugs and other substances abuse.The main aim of this study is to evaluate factors influencing drug and substance abuse among secondary school going students in Vihiga division of Vihiga county. Substance abuse and use of drugs by young people is a problem that has remained to be a challenge globally .Proliferation of avariaty of factors in the society has offered an opportunity for students in high school to gain acces to drugs and other substance .The study therefore sought to find out some of this factors. In order to do this, the study employed the peer cluster theory in validating theretical frame work.Furthemore descriptive research design was used in determining characterist of aparticular variable.The target population was all the secondary schools in Vihiga county ,Vihiga division.The reserch used asample of 10% of the population which was 180 students.It also used stratified random sampling procedure to a sample of the population.The research instrument used in this case was aquestionnaire.Validity of the instrument was tested through a comparison of pilot stiud test results with known literature as well as review of instruments by expert in the department of education Mount Kenya university .Apilot study used .Reliability was tested using Cronbach’s alpha value and quantitative data analysis techniques were used to obtain legible inferences .Data was presented in tables and charts.The study found out that factors influence drug 2and substance abuse include peer pressure, family , curiosity of students self esteem,social trends and media
