Abstract
The number of students enroling in physics in secondary schools in Bomet Central, Bomet County is low as compared to those enroling in Biology and Chemistry. This study sought to determine the students related factors influencing the choice of physics in secondary schools in Bomet Central, Bomet County. The study was guided by the following objectives: to determine the effect of the students’ perceptions on the choice of physics, to find out the influence of the students’ motivation on the choice of physics, to investigate the influence of the students' attitude on the choice of physics and to investigate the influence of the students’ future career on the choice of physics. This study adopted descriptive survey design to collect data on the students’ related factors influencing the choice of physics in secondary schools in Bomet Central, Bomet County. Six secondary schools were sampled and 207 form three students out of 240; took part in the study. This gave a response rate of 86.25%. The data was collected using a questionnaire for the form three students in the sampled schools. The findings were summarized and reported in percentages, frequency distributions tables, pie-charts and histograms. The data collected was analyzed using SPSS computer software. The study found out that 56.96% of the respondents perceive physics to be difficult, and 60.3% had negative attitudes towards physics. A further 62.5% of the respondents did not choose physics because it was not related to their future career. The study recommended that the students should be encouraged and given opportunities to develop positive attitudes towards physics. The study recommended that the teachers should cultivate a good relationship with students in order to inspire them to choose physics. For further research the study recommended that another study be done to investigate the teachers’ related factors affecting the choice of physic in secondary schools.
