Abstract
Low completion rate in secondary education has been the area of concern to education officials and stakeholders. Although the subsidised education is intended to solve most of problems in education, it is not guaranteed that there will be effective education. The purpose of the study was to find out the impact of subsidised secondary education on retention of students in secondary school in Kangema sub-county. The objectives of the study were: To assess how adequacy of subsidised secondary education funds impact retention of students in public secondary schools in Kangema sub-county, To determine how the social economic background of students impact on retention in public secondary school, to find out challenges facing effective implementation of subsidised secondary education in relation to student retention, determine ways of improving subsidised secondary education in as far as retention of students in Kangema sub-county is concerned. The study included all the 32 schools and their principals and students enrolled in public secondary schools during the time of the study in Kangema sub-county. Six county schools were selected. From among the district schools, seventeen schools were selectedthrough purposive sampling. Having considered the named criteria, 65.5% of all the schools inthe district were selected. From the seventeen schools all principals were involved in the study.Twenty- five students from every sample school were also included in the sample. Primary method of data collection was by questionnaires, which were administered to the principals and the students. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings of the study indicated that there are many beneficiaries of subsidised education and majorities can be retained in schools. Nevertheless, not all students are retained in schools because; the money allocated is not enough to cater for all the requirements including the personal effects. Recommendations made to the government was, to make efforts to release enough funds to meet the growing demands ofsecondary education in order to enhance the retention of students and also the funds should bereleased on time in regard to the term dates. The researcher suggests that a research can be carried out on the effectiveness of subsidized secondary education the students’ performance in the country.
