Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate challenges faced by learners under the care of
alcoholic parents and guardians in Kangema sub-county, Kenya. The study was guided by the
following objectives: determine the extent of theimpact of alcoholic parents and guardians on
learners; analyze the effect of alcoholic parents and guardians on the socio-economic set up of
learners; determine the influence of alcoholic parents and guardians on schooling and enrolment
of learners in Kangema Division, Kenya.
The study adopted the descriptive survey method of research. The target population was public
secondary schools in Kangema Sub-County. This involved 25 schools, 25 teacher counselors and
144 form 4 students. The study used stratified sampling and simple random sampling techniques
to select the study respondents. Questionnaires and interview schedules were used to collect data.
Piloting was carried out in two schools not in the sample. Head teachers, teachers and students
answered questions in the questionnaires and the Area Education Officer was interviewed. A
SPSS application was used to analyze data by editing, coding, classification and tabulation. Piecharts
and histograms were alsoused to form the basis of report. Conclusions and
recommendations were also made based on the findings of the study.
