Publication: An investigation to assess whether the lack of local teachers is a Contributing factor to the poor performance of pupils in public Primary schools in Kajiado East Constituency

The prime purpose of this study was to correct enough data overhaul and find out whether the lack of local teachers in public primary schools in Kajiado East Constituency and apparently Kajiado County as a whole. Questionnaires were be used as the data collection tools. These questionnaires contained both closed and open ended items / questions. The researcher used survey design. Simple random sampling method was used to select respondents of which at least two parents, ten pupils and two teachers from each school were given questionnaires to fill in. To be specific the lottery method of simple random sampling was utilized. All questionnaires from the field collapsed and analyzed. The researcher envisages using frequency distribution tables, pie charts and bar graph to present the data. A discussion was made; conclusions and recommendations were also given in light of the data obtained. This formed the fifth chapter of the report. The researcher found out that Kajiado East was not performing well in national examinations. This was due to factors like, negative attitude from pupils towards their teachers. Negative attitude from parents towards the teachers in their schools; negative attitude of teachers and towards the districts that they worked in. these factors had created a feeling of hatred and mistrust among teachers on one hand and parents and pupils on the other. All these factors had played out to result in the drop performance of pupils in public primary schools in Kajiado East constituency. The researcher also found out that teachers in the constituency went through various hardships as they worked in Kajiado East. These hardships included; poor transport systems and infrastructure long distances travelled from places of residence to work places and so on. These factors had played a part in de- motivating teachers and creating their negative attitudes towards education. Various ways were of improving performance of two schools were however suggested, they included better salaries for teachers, improvement of transport infrastructure, provision of meals for teachers and students and lastly increased provision of learning resources in schools. These measures if properly put in place may help in solving the problem of poor performance of learners in public primary schools in Kajiado East constituency.
