Publication: Causes of secondary schools dropouts in Nyamira District , Kenya

Secondary education is a fundamental need to the child as it helps the child to develop holistically. This study was sought to find out causes of dropouts in secondary schools going children in Nyamira District, Nyamira County and recommended intervention measures and further studies to ameliorate the same. The phenomenal has severe consequences to both the individual and the society in terms of economic, social political and physiological dimensions. The major findings of the study was to determine the causes of drop outs in public secondary school. This focused on gender disparity, peer influence , irrelevant educational programmes, poverty, separation and divorce as the main factors determining the proper development stages in children. Simple random sampling was used to select the representative sample of forty students ten teachers and ten principals who contributed to the sample. The study employed descriptive survey design. The survey gathered data at particular time with the intention of describing the nature of existing condition identifying the standard against which existing conditions would be compared. The population of the study comprised of 2000 students. 100 teachers and 20 principals. probability sampling technique was used to select 200 student 10 principals and 10 teachers. The instruments of data collection were questionnaires, pilot was done in 10 secondary schools using test retest methods. Validity of the instruments was ascertained by my supervisor. Quantitative data collection using closed-ended items in the questionnaires was analyzed using descriptive statistics like frequencies and percentages. The findings were presented in form of tables and graphs. Principals and teachers recommended to employ guidance and counseling as a measure for retaining learners in the school until completion. The study therefore recommended that schools should strengthen guidance and counseling in order to offer quality services to the learners. Donors and well wishers to assist the learners from poor families , increase constituency development fund and local authority trust fund and government bursaries to take care of increasing number of needy students in the district . School projects to be initiated to reduce parents’ burden on school revies. The findings of the study may be used by policy makers to curb drop outs.
