dc.description.abstract | This study sought to find out how collaborative learning as a reading culture would better the performance of literature in secondary schools. The effects of the reading culture will be analyzed in relation to the current performance of English which is integrated with literature in general. The study was carried out in Gatanga sub-county, Murang’a County in Central Kenya. Six secondary schools that are in the sub- county i.e. six mixed day schools and two girls boarding schools were all involved. Fifteen students from each of the six secondary schools and two teachers of literature were issued with questionnaires which were used to collect data. The students’ questionnaires were different from those of the teachers. Questionnaires for both students and teachers of English were used to solicit for information that was later analyzed and thus provided conclusions. The data collected was only used for the purpose of this study. This study was guided by four objectives1. to investigate the causes of poor performance in Literature among secondary school learners of Gatanga Zone, Morang’s District.2.to examine the factors that cause poor reading culture among literature students among secondary school learners of Gatanga sub- county, Murang’acounty.3.to examine the difference in items between learning individually and learning collaboratively among secondary school learners of Gatanga sub-county, Murang’a county.3. To examine the significant difference in achievement items between learning individually and learning collaboratively among secondary school learners of Gatanga sub-county, Murang’a county The study used descriptive survey design .Data was collected using the following instruments ,written test item for students and questionnaire for students and teachers and observation schedule. The data that was collected will be analyzed using statistical package for social literature. The descriptive statistics will include percentages, mean and standard deviation .Data was represented frequency, percentage and graphs to establish differences in literature performance. The researcher investigated the students’ on the effectiveness of collaborative learning as reading culture. It also sought how frequent they read literary materials that include the set books and other reading materials like magazines, journals and other available novels. He also sought to investigate the students’ interest in reading literature materials such as novels, plays and poems. | en_US |
