ABSTRACT This study focused on investigation on the challenges facing day secondary education in Kenya. The aim was to bring out the various constraints, their description, analysis and evaluation and their effects on free day secondary schooling in Kenya. The background of this study shows the efforts to provide free secondary education. The provision of free secondary education is very important in Kenya given that the country is a low income one. The purpose of this study was to find out factors affecting Day secondary education in Kenya. The study had five objectives derived from the said purpose. The objectives include determining the state of facilities in Day Secondary schools, finding out the presence or absence of hidden costs on Day Secondary schools, determining Enrollment rates of day secondary schools and the situation of delayed government funding in Day secondary schools. The study was carried out in Machakos County of formerly Eastern province. The study is based on the theory of constraints deterring the achievements of FSE objectives. It is hoped that the research results will be used by policy makers in the education sector to help emancipate this program from those factors that hinder its full implementation. Problems such as limited finances and time were the key hindrances to this research. Literature review was done on the implementation of free secondary education globally. The study utilized the survey design and data collection was by questionnaire method. The questionnaire was justified through piloting. A sample was collected from each school in a number of schools using simple random sampling method
