Publication: An investigation on effects of drug and substance abuse in secondary schools in Kanyangi zone, Lower Yatta Sub County, Kitui County.

The purpose of this study was to investigate on the effect of drug and substance abuse in secondary schools within Kanyangi zone, Lower Yatta sub-county, Kitui County. According to world health organization (WHO) (2002), drug and substance abuse related diseases kill two in ten adults globally causing around five million deaths yearly. From childhood to adulthood, people tend to be most susceptible to experimentation with drug and substance use. This study was guided by the following objectives; to find out different categories of drug and substance abuse, to determine causes of drug and substance abuse, and examine the effects of drug and substance abuse in secondary schools. Literature review was adapted from different demographic reports and theories on drug and substance abuse. The study shed light to parents, teachers, community, students and Non-governmental organization. In chapter three data was collected using survey method. The target population was all secondary schools within the zone, together with teachers and parents. Purposive sampling techniques was used to select all the study subjects. The sample size was 63 made up of 4s students, 9 teachers and parents. Two research instruments were used to collect data namely; questionnaires and interview schedules. Data was analysed both qualitatively and also by use of table, charts, graphs tallies, percentages and degrees. The researcher concluded that alcohol and tobacco are the most abused drugs by students within Kanyangi zone. It is caused by peer pressure and affects the performance of learners due to lowering of academic grades. The researcher recommended that parents, teachers, the government through the ministry of education should organize for seminars and workshops to educate both the learners on the effects of drugs and substances abuse. They should also offer guidance and counselling to help curb the spread of drug and substance abuse in schools.
