Abstract
The purpose of this study was to find out and document the factors that
influence the teaching and learning of ICT in the teaching and learning of
English. The objectives of this research were to investigate how cost of ICT
training materials influences the ICT implementation in selected secondary
schools in Kieni east sub-county, to find out how teacher skills in ICT influence ICT
implementation in selected secondary schools in Kieni East sub-county and to
establish how administrative support influences ICT implementation in selected
secondary schools in the same region.The study targeted girls’ and boys’ day
and boarding secondary schools. The studyuseda descriptive research design in
which stratified sampling method was used to categorize theschools. Random
and purposive sampling was used to select 42 respondents from every school
under the studyThe data was collected using questionnaires andan observation
checklist. Qualitative data was described while quantitative data was
analyzedusing Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and presented
infrequencies, tables, percentages and graphs. From the study was found that
the cost of ICT training materials is out of reach for most public secondary
schools in the sub-county. The high cost of the materials was therefore a
challenge that hindered the integration of ICT in teaching and learning of
English, it was also found that teachers ICT skills affected the integration of ICT in
teaching and learning of English.Most of the teachers lack adequate ICT skills
thereby making integration of ICT a challenge, there also lacks adequate
administrative support in relation to ICT integration. The study recommended
that the government should train teachers in ICT. The parents and the
government should also team up to establish appropriate ICT infrastructure in
the public secondary schools of Kieni East. This includes; building of computer
laboratories, providing laptops, projectors and internet connectivity to the
schools. Teachers should also be motivated into using ICT in classroom teaching.
