An investigation onto the effects of pre-scientific methods of on general performance of primary school pupils in Buruburu zone, Nairobi county

Abstract

ABSTRACT The aim of the study was to investigation onto the effects of pre-science methods of on general of primary school pupils in Buruburu zone, Nairobi county. The objectives that guided the study were to investigate the general performance of Buruburu primary school in Buruburu zone, investigate various methods of learning applied in Buruburu primary school in Buruburu zone, to investigate effects of various methods of learning on performance in Buruburu primary school in Buruburu zone and to investigate the students’ perception on the use of pre-scientific methods of learning in Buruburu primary school in Buruburu zone. The purpose of the study to investigate the effects of pre-scientific methods of learning on students general performance in Buruburu primary school Buruburu zone. Literature review contained the following objectives ; review of related theories, learning in relation to certain habits, learning in relation to pre- established beliefs, learning in relation to use of common sense, learning in relation to personal impressions, learning in relation to popular believes and learning in relation to drilling. The researcher used descriptive study design, the target population was from 6 schools, 6 principals, 6 deputy principals, 6 head of department teacher and 100 pupils from the respective school. Multi-stage, purposive sampling and simple random sampling was used to get the sample size. Data presentation and analysis was done using the objectives that guided the questionnaire. Coded data was presented in form of tables, graphs and pie charts. The findings were used to make conclusion. the findings of this study have revealed that pre-scientific methods of learning have greatly contributed to general poor performance in secondary schools in Makadara Sub County. The researcher also found out that limited scientific methods of learning were used in the schools. In addition the researcher found out that the learners have a negative perception in regard to the methods applied during teaching and learning process. It was also found out that lack of proper preparation and the choice of instructional resources have negatively affected academic performance.
