Effects of drug abuse among secondary school students in Elwak at Mandera County

Abstract

This research was carried to find out the effects of drug abuse among secondary school student in Elwak at Mandera County. The research was guided by the following objectives; To find out the commonly abused drugs in Elwak at Mandera County, to investigate the factors that promotes drug abuse among learners in secondary, Elwak at Mandera County, to identify the effects of drug abuse among learners with Elwak at Mandera County and to find out intervention measures for drug abuse among student in Elwak at Mandera County. The researcher used descriptive survey design to carry out the researcher, where respondents were sampled using simple random sampling and questionnaires were used to collect data, which was analysed using Microsoft Excel and organized into frequency tables and presented using bar graphs and pie charts. The following were concluded from the research findings: The commonly abused drugs were found to be tobacco, alcohol, bhang and heroine. The factors that promote drug abuse among learners in secondary schools was peer pressure, low self-esteem, environment, mass media, family and performance enhancement, stress had and Thrill seeking. Effects of drug abuse among learners were found to be tooth decay, loss of body weight, lack of sleep, Nausea and mouth ulcers. The intervention measures for drug abuse among secondary school learners were found to be teachers offering guidance and counseling, parents by teaching their children good values, police by ensuring law and order is maintained by dealing with drugs vendors and alcohol sellers, using other children who can be good mentors.
