The role of teachers in moral formation of secondary school Students in Kenya: a case study of St. Paul’s Miluki, Bungoma- Kenya

Abstract

The purpose of the study aimed to investigate the role of teachers in moral formation of secondary school students. The study was carried out in St. Paul’s Miluki secondary school in Bungoma County. The research questions were; which techniques were the teachers using in moral formation of students in St. Paul’s Miluki Secondary school? What challenges were teachers in St. Paul’s Miluki Secondary School facing in the course of moral formation of students? How could the role of teachers in moral formations be improved? The study was significant to secondary school principals, teachers, researchers, curriculum developers and parents. The conceptual framework of the study recognized various practices of moral formation that could be employed by teachers and the possible outcome. The literature reviewed on the concept of moral formation, teacher involvement in moral formation, techniques of moral formation and challenges of moral formation. The study adapted a case study design. The target population was made up of the principal, six teachers and twenty students. The researcher used purposeful sampling for the principal, simple random sampling to get six teachers and systematic random sampling to select twenty students. The instruments that were used for data collection were focused group discussion guide for students, questionnaire for teachers and interview guide for the principal and an observation schedule. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies and tables accompanied by narrative reports. The teacher involved themselves in moral formation of the students in the following ways; guiding and counseling, life skills lesson and family sessions. Forums for moral formations were classrooms, assembly, clubs, games and disciplinary panels. Techniques for moral formation were punishments, role modeling, reinforcements, suspension and discussions with parents.
