Influence of examination cheating on students perfomance in Mumbuni zone Machakos sub-county, Machakos county.

Abstract

The main objectives of the study was to establish why students cheat in examination in Mumbuni Zone Machakos Sub-County, Machakos County. The specific objectives were To determine policy exists regarding examination cheating in examinations, To investigate situational factors regarding assessment design that influences cheating in national public examinations, To find out the major reasons why students cheat in examinations and To analyze the effects of examination cheating on students behavioral characteristics in Mumbuni Zone, Machakos County. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. The study targeted 15 public schools, these includes 7 boarding (boys/girls) schools and 8 mixed day secondary schools serving Mumbuni Zone. All the head teacher, twenty teachers, two hundred students, and Head of departments (HOD). The data was collected by use of questionnaires, interviews schedule and focus group discussions. Descriptive and analytical statistics was used to analyse the data obtained. The data collected from the field was coded and entered in the computer for analysis using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). Qualitative and quantitative data was analysed thematically and using descriptive statistics including frequency counts and percentages. The data was presented in summary form using frequency distribution tables.
