Challenges facing primary school deputy headteachers in managing learners’ discipline in Murang’a east sub county, Murang’a county, Kenya.

Deputy Head teachers are very instrumental in the management of primary schools. To a large extent, they encounter a lot of administrative problems. This is because they spend a lot of time handling problems from learners, teachers and parents. To be effective in assisting head teachers in managing schools, deputy head teachers should be equipped with the right skills through in-service training. This study seeks to establish the challenges faced by primary schools deputy head teachers in managing learners in Murang’a East Sub County. The objectives of the study are to establish the skills deputy head teachers possess in managing learners in schools, to evaluate the effects of school resources on deputy head teachers role of managing learners in primary schools, to investigate leadership practices adopted by deputy head teachers in managing learners, to evaluate the effects of banning corporal punishment on deputy head teachers role of managing learners and to seek suggestions on possible remedies for challenges facing deputy head teachers in managing learners in primary schools. The researcher has reviewed related literature from various sources on the topic. This is presented in chapter two. Chapter three comprises the methodology the researcher intend to use in the study i.e. research design, locale of the study, population, sampling procedure research instruments, piloting, data collection procedure and methods of data analysis. The study will employ a descriptive survey research design. The population of the study will comprise 53 deputy head teachers, 300 teachers and the DEO. The sample size is expected to be 113 respondents, made up of 8 deputy head teachers, 104 teachers and one DEO. Data from this sample population will be collected using questionnaires for teachers and an interview schedule for the D.E.O. Data analysis will be done using descriptive statistics after data cleaning and coding. Quantitative data will be analyzed by tallying the numbers of similar responses. Results of data analysis will be presented using frequency distribution tables, bar graphs and pie charts.
