Abstract
Peace education is vital in promoting a culture of peace in the World. Effective implementation of peace education will enable individuals understand global problems, have skills to resolve conflicts constructively, know and live by international standards of human rights, gender and racial equality, appreciate cultural diversity and respect the integrity of the Earth. The purpose of this study was to evaluate Institutions preparedness for the implementation of peace education in public primary schools in Naivasha Sub-County of Nakuru county. The study was guided by the following specific objectives: to assess status of peace education in public primary schools in Naivasha sub- county, to establish teacher preparedness for the implementation of peace education, to establish the availability of teaching and learning materials on the implementation of peace education in public primary schools in Naivasha sub-county. The study applied concurrent triangulation design. In this study simple random sampling was used to select 7 out of the 65 public primary schools which constituted a sample of 10%. The head teachers of the 7 schools automatically become part of the sample. A total of 98 respondents were targeted by the study including 7 headteachers, 21 teachers and 70 pupils. The study got 100% response rate as all the respondents targeted (98) participated in the study. Regarding the status of the implementation of peace education in primary schools in Naivasha Sub-County, the study found that 81% of the teachers indicated that they teach peace education. It was also found that peace education was infused in other subjects such as social studies, C.R.E and Life skills. On the preparedness of teachers for the implementation of peace education, the study found that 11 (57%) were sensitized and trained. The study also found that 7 (64%) of those who had been trained indicated that the training was inadequate. The study further concluded that even though there are materials and resources for teaching peace education in primary schools in Naivasha Sub-County, they were inadequate. The study found that pupils perceived peace education as an important tool for promoting national unity and identity through peaceful relationships between the communities. The study concluded that quite a number of teachers had not been sensitized or trained on peace education. The study recommends that the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology through the In – Service Training (INSET) Unit should train teachers on peace education. This will help in improving the delivery of peace education curriculum through use of appropriate methods of teaching and application of the relevant skills. The study further recommends that adequate teaching and learning materials and resources such as story books, wall drawings and relevant literature be availed in schools by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
