An investigation into the challenges facing public Secondary schools in Mbooni Division, Makueni County.

Abstract

Several challenges have continued to face public secondary schools. This is especially after the introduction of free primary and secondary education (FPSE) which makes many students to flock in the public secondary schools. Therefore this research has investigated challenges facing public secondary schools in Mbooni Division, Makueni County. All these challenges make public secondary schools not to perform as expected. The research used both quantitative and qualitative approaches where case study was also used. The study used purposive sampling and simple random sampling. The study used questionnaire and interview as the research instruments to collect the data from the sampled respondents. The study considered challenges such as strikes by teachers and students, indiscipline by students, lack of enough funds, lack of enough facilities and resources, technology, motivation, misallocation, unqualified teachers, class size, poor communication among others. The study therefore recommended all the stakeholders should join in finding the solutions to those challenges. More allocation of CDF funds to the public schools, more fundraising employing more teachers by the government and Board of management, motivating of teachers in order to produce better results in the public secondary schools.
