Impact of single parenting on academic performance in Thika sub-county Kiambu county

Abstract

There are many students that come from single parent houses. Due to many issues that stem from the single family models many students are able to reach their full potential because not all their needs are satisfied leading to low performances (Bandura).the objectives of this study are finding out challenges experienced by single parents in child parenting in secondary schools ,investigating relationship between a student’s performance and their upbringing ,investigating academic performance of students in secondary schools from single parent and intact households and finding out the various causes of single parenthood in Thika Sub-county Kiambu County. The theory used is Maslow hierarchy of needs which recommends children should be provided with basic needs to perform well academically. The methods which will be used to collect data in this research are questionnaires and interview schedules. The sampling procedure used will be stratified random sampling where the data will be divided into strata and the sample obtained from the stratum. Quantitative data collected was analyzed using tables in percentages and frequencies, charts and graphs while qualitative data in form of themes
