Disability can be explained in terms of any restriction that results from impairment and hinders a person from performing an activity within the range considered normal for a normal person (Heward, 2006, Hardman, Drew & Egan, 2005). The purpose of the study will be to assess the factors that affect Special Needs Education in Thika West District. The research objectives will be to determine the socio-cultural factors that affect special needs education, the state of the school learning facilities, teacher’s attitudes towards the inclusion of children with special needs and the essence of inclusion of special needs education. The study will come up with findings, which will help in recognition of the existence of children with special needs by the society and scholars pursuing this field of study,and remove the stigmatization of children with special needs. Generally, the study will be expected to contribute towards the existing body of knowledge and form basis for the research by other scholars, this is because its findings will be empirical therefore available for criticism and further studies. A theoretical framework of the study will be highlighted in the first chapter. Questionnaires and interview schedules, which will be used to collect both quantitative and qualitative data. In addition, document analysis will be used in this research. The study will employ descriptive survey. Quantitative data will be analysed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) and the results will be presented using frequency tables, pie charts, bar graphs and percentages to make meaningful conclusions
