Abstract
Despite the overwhelming intervention strategies by the Ministry of Education, non-state actors and
many other keen stakeholders to improve the performance in Mathematics in secondary schools,
students continue to perform poorly in National Exams. The objectives of the study will be: To
determine the challenges facing teachers and students in the process of teaching and learning of
mathematics, to investigate the attitude of teachers and learners towards mathematics, to establish
challenges experienced by principals in process of dealing with students and mathematics teachers
and to establish principals’, teachers’ and students’ views regarding ways of addressing challenges
experienced in the process of teaching and learning of mathematics in secondary schools of
Roysambu Sub-County, Nairobi County. The study will use descriptive survey design combining
both qualitative and quantitative research strategies. The target population will comprise of 21
public mixed day secondary schools with a total population of 2400 students, 60 mathematics
teachers and 21 principals. Eight schools constituting 66.7% of the 12 schools of Roysambu Sub-
County will be sampled. Purposive sampling will be used in the selection of the eight schools,
respective principals and mathematics teachers. From each selected school, 4 mathematics will be
purposively sampled whereas 25 form four students will be selected using systematic sampling.
Data will collected by use of questionnaire which will have both closed and open ended questions.
Reliability and validity of the instruments will be assessed through a pilot study prior to actual data
collection procedure. Computer programmes such as excel will be used to analyze both qualitative
and quantitative data. The data will be presented in pie charts, tables and bar graphs.3w.
