This study involves the effects of teachers factors that influence the performance of mentally retarded children. That is various factors in teachers that may have a negative attitude towards mentally retarded children and their effects. This study is to show which are these teachers factors and how do they affect mentally retarded children. Also to what extent and how is the performance of mentally retarded learners affected. By the end of this study the researcher will be able to state how the mentally retarded children are affected by the teachers attitude and also be able to explain the various strategies to be put in place in order to ensure the mentally retarder children are given their rights. This study is guided by Jean Piagets theory of developmental processes of concept formation which follow a definite pattern of stages which every child should go through. In this study the researcher shows how mentally retarded children deviate from the Jean Piagets stages of development. This is because such children growth but no intellectual development occurs. The instrument to be used will involve the preparation of questionnaires, interview guide and tests for both learners and teachers in order to get the first hand information. The information so obtained is then analyzed in tables, pie charts and bar graphs to make it meaningful. The researcher used the survey method in order to collect the required information from the targeted group. The study was carried out in Nyeri County, Othaya division at Iria-ini Zone in lower primary public schools. In this study, the researcher used purposive sampling as this suited well the study. The data from the questionnaires is analyzed with aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS v.20) software using percentages and averages. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used in analyzing the data.
