Abstract
This investigation
was
carried out in Kangeta
division,
Igembe south
district in public primary
schools.
The purpose of the study
was
to investigate the influence of miraa chewing and
its
relationship with school dropouts in public primary schools in
I
gembe south district
and
establish
the strategies that can be used to address the problem.
The study
was
guided by the following
research
questions;
find
ing
out the influence
of using miraa as a
miraa
on students’
performance,
find
ing
out the relationship between miraa farming
, c
onsumption, and
trade and learners’ school
attendance, establish
ing
the extent to which peer influence among learners
to chew miraa affects
learning and
establish
ing
strategies that can be used to reduce child
labor
and miraa abuse among
learners. The
target population
consist
ed
of all public primary schools in kangeta division
,
Igembe
south district. Random sampling
was
used to sample 8 head
teachers
,26 class teachers,
and 134 pupils
f
i
eld survey method
was
used to collect da
ta using questionnaire
s which was
in
three sets;
Head
teachers’ ,class teacher
s ’and pupils’ questionnaires .The
questionnaires
contain
ed
both open and closed
-
ended questions
.
The instrument validity
was
determined during
a pilot study while reliability
was
determined using internal consistency.
The researcher
administer
ed
the questionnaires personally. Descriptive statistics
was used
to analyze
quantitative data in form of frequencies, percentages, average tables, charts and graphs. The
analysis of the stru
ctures of items
was
mainly done using the statistical pack
age for social
sciences [SPSS] version 17.0
