Publication: An investigation of the factors that influence large student enrollment in public secondary schools in Yatta sub county, Machakos county.

Education is a major drive in most world economies. Hence the study will be geared towards large enrolment in public secondary schools in Yatta Sub County, Machakos County, seeking to establish constraints in the use of ICT in teaching and learning processes in the area. It will also seek to find factors that affect large enrolment of students in public secondary schools, to assess the perception of the students and the view of the community regarding educating them, to identify the key challenges that prevents students from accessing of secondary education despite free secondary education. The findings of the study will contribute information to the policy makers that could help them to formulate their policies on student enrolment in public secondary schools. The will study sample schools using purposive sampling technique using the criteria of the type of schools (boarding, day, mixed, boys or girls). Descriptive survey design will also be used since it is concerned with gathering of facts. From the sampled schools an equal number of students, teachers and the principal will be selected. Data will be collected using questionnaires, interviews and observations. A pre-setting of research tools will be carried out in one of the institutions. Data collected will be analyzed descriptively using chi square and pearsons’ product moment correlation. Descriptive statistics will also be used. Then the data will be presented inform of Statistical Package for social sciences (SPSS) Version 21.0 inform of tables, pie charts and graphs where necessary. Highest proportion of class teachers (61%) had not taken long period in the schools they were in meaning that they were mostly new in those particular schools making them to work hard. They were still a subject to self motivation to make the bo y- girl child to enrol in secondary education. The study also revealed that parent level of education affect girl participation at the rate of 87%, lack of parents support affect at the rate of 88% and parents (98%) encourage girls to work hard in school. The study recommends that Parents should also be educated and sensitized by the school B.O.G that the Ministry of Education is not fully responsible for the payment of levies. The Ministry of Education only carters for tuition fees and the parents have to come in and pay the development fees as well as feeding programme fees.The Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) should give M.O.E support in provision of girls’ personal effects like sanitary pads/towels, school fees and other levies and learning materials like text books for the needy girls for their participation in secondary education. The head teachers (principals) should ensure that in their schools there are female teachers forming 1/3 of the teachers in staff. The female teachers are to act as the role model for the girl child participation in secondary education this female teachers should be sensitized by the principals that they should encourage the girls to participate n education and also tell them the importance of their education for their future. The teachers together with the principals with the principals should sensitize both the boys and the girls that on the side of education all are the same and they need to compete in participation in education with regardless of gender.
