Abstract
In this dissertation, the researcher looked at to what extent did the state of being an orphan impact on the academic achievement of students in secondary schools. The study was taken at Maikona Division with hope that it represented the entire country. The problems cited in this document are similar to the ones outside the district under study. At the introduction, it attempted to look at the entire state of being an orphan and what role the Kenyan government is playing. It then narrowed to Maikona Division and looked critically at problems affecting orphans there. It was against such backgrounds that the researcher saw the need for research; the researcher was guided by the objectives as follows; to determine the relationship of being an orphan and academic achievement in secondary schools, to establish the influence of foster parenting on the academic achievement of orphans and to investigate the effect of lack of basic needs on the learning of orphans in Maikona Division. The researcher used survey research design to carry out the study. The target population for the study was 8500 people among them orphans of school going age. Due to convenience of the study the researcher used a sample size of 45 subjects. Questionnaires consisting of closed and open ended questions were used to collect data where data collected was analyzed using statistical package of social sciences (SPSS) and later presented in form of tables and graphs for easy understanding. The results obtained from the findings enabled the researcher to draw conclusion and gave the necessary recommendations.
