The effects of punishment on academic Performance among the ECDE Children in Makumbi Zone, Nyandarua County

Abstract

The prime purpose of this study is to collect enough data to overhaul the effects of punishment on children in ECDE centre in Makumbi zone Nyandarua County. Five research objectives were formulated to guide the study. The study is of great significance to the teacher as it will arm them with the relevant information on effects of punishment which may assist them in implementing the existing government educational polices. The researcher used survey design method to collect the required data. Simple random sampling method was used to select the subject. The research was carried out on a group of 38 respondents who were head teacher teachers and learners in Makumbi Zone, Nyandarua County to represent the situation of the whole community. Tools used by the researcher during data collection period were questionnaires, interviews as well as observation schedules. All the questionnaires were collected from the field where the data collected was corrupt and analyzed using frequency distribution table, pie charts and percentages. The Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used for generating tables, figures and diagrams The researcher found out that the most type of punishment administered to ECDE children are corporal punishment, physical punishment, bad comments, as well as criticizing and yelling. The finding also revealed that punishment is a major contribution to poor performance among the ECDE children in Makumbi Zone of Nyandarua County. The study has made recommendation to alleviate this problems by sensitizing and mobilizing teachers and other stakeholders to embrace guidance and counseling rather than punishment
