Abstract
The purpose of the research was to investigate factors that influence prevalence of drug use
among secondary school students in Malindi District with an objective of suggesting necessary
corrective measures in curbing the vice. The research was guided by a number of objectives; To
establish the influence of mode of parenting on prevalence of drug use among students, to
establish the influence of availability of drugs on the prevalence of substance use among
secondary school students, to establish the influence of school administration on prevalence of
drug use and to establish the influence of peer pressure on the prevalence of drug use among
secondary school students. The findings of the study is of great importance to the Ministry of
Education as preventive drug abuse education through the Area Chief to start an enlightment
campaign in schools to create awareness, the government can also seek to offer guidance and
counseling in-service teachers’ training courses and the non government organizations may use
the findings of the research to start undertaking activities aimed at reducing the demand for and
supply of drugs. The theory used was Gorsuch (1976) Multiple Model theory. Descriptive survey
research design was used in conducting the study. The target population for the study was around
6,127 students coming from 23 secondary schools in the district. A sample size of about 10% of
the population was selected from 8 secondary schools of the 23 schools which was selected by
using a stratified random sampling. Equal number of boys and girls will be selected by applying
the simple random sampling design. A number of data collection instruments was used, among
them the use of interviews and recording the interviews for future reference. In addition a
student’s questionnaire will be used in data collection. The data collected was analyzed using a
descriptive statistics such as percentages and mean values
