Influence of early sexual debut among teenage girls in primary schools and the effects on academic pursuit in Makueni county,Kenya.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The study set out to investigate influence of early debut among primary school teenage girls and the effects on education pursuit in Makueni County, Kenya. The study dwelled on the Kenya demographic and health survey 2011/12. It dealt with teenagers under the primary school level within the age of 10 – 15 years. The dependent variable were age at first sex and the independent variables include peer pressure, leisure, media, poverty, early maturing and type and place of residence. The study will sample to female teenagers aged 10 – 15 years. It used descriptive statistics. Bivariate results showed that peer pressure, early maturing and media was significantly associated with age at first sexual debut. Teenagers who are in the age bracket of 10 – 15 years were significantly be more likely to initiate sexual activity or engage them in early sexual debut hence influencing their educational pursuit.Cluster sampling and stratified sampling were the sampling methods applied by the researcher. From the sampled institutions,data had been collected by use of questionnaires and interviews.Among the primary schools reached by the researcher are Muthethe, Tawa, Makueni,Wautu, Tangu and Nzaui primary schools.In the report the researcher has used piecharts ,tables and graphs. The researcher found that when it comes to influence of early sexual debutamong teenage girls in primary schools and the effect on academic pursuit in makueni county ,Kenya,peer pressure,early maturity,media and poverty plays a major role.The researcher recommends that the government ,the school,the community,the parents and even the pupils should join hands and fight the issue with one voice so as emerge victorious
