An investigation into impacts of socio- economic factors on Low retention rate of girls in public secondary schools in Ruiru sub county, Kiambu county.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the socio – economic factors contributing to low retention of girls in secondary schools. This was guided by three objectives which are: To find out how poverty contributes to low retention rate of girls in public secondary school. To find out how parents educational level affects low retention rate of girls in public secondary school. To find out how cultural beliefs and practices on girl child education contribute to low retention rate of girls in public secondary school. Descriptive survey research design will be employed in this study. This is because it make use of both qualitative and quantitative data to describe the state of affairs as they exist. The target population will be Secondary school teachers and parent. The entire Sub County has 34 public secondary thus the target population will comprise of 500 Secondary school teachers and 1280 secondary parent representatives. The total target population will be 1780 in which The sample size of 534 respondents will be drawn from. The research instrument that will predominantly used will be the Questionnaire. Qualitative data will be first organized into themes, then descriptive statistical method will be used after frequencies and percentages are calculated from the data obtained in the field.
