An investigation on adolescence pregnancy on girl child education in primary and secondary schools in Kajiado county

Abstract

The cases of teen pregnancies are increasingly being reported worldwide and in specific, the area of study, Kajiado County. The study therefore was meant to investigate on adolescence pregnancy on girl child education (primary and secondary) in Kajiado County. The objectives of the study were to find out the causes of adolescence pregnancy in Kajiado County, to establish the effects of adolescence pregnancy on girls’ education in the area and to determine the strategies that can be used to eradicate teen pregnancy in the area. The study was significant to teenage girls, school administration, parents and the government. The study employed the Theory of reasoned Action (TRA) by Martin Fishbein and IcekAjzen (2009) which suggests that a person’s behavioral intentions depend on the person’s attitude and subjective norms. This theory ensured that all the stakeholders on the issue under study are understood in terms of opinions, attitudes and subjective norms about the issue. The study employed descriptive survey research design. Both stratified and simple random sampling methods were used to select the schools, both secondary and primary, to select the class teachers, head teachers and parents. A sample of 45 form three girls were obtained, 56 class eight girls, 17 class teachers, 17 head teachers and 17 parents. The study was to obtain questionnaires and interview schedule as instruments for the data collection. The validity of the questionnaires was checked through pilot study in two Divisions in different County from that of study. The data collected was analyzed using written information and descriptive statistics such as percentages, charts, frequency tables and graphs.
