Psychological effects of abortion on performance among Mount Kenya University girls Thika campus

Abstract

The study was carried out to research on the psychological effects of abortion on performance among Mount Kenya University students. The objectives of the study was to find out the causes of abortion among students, find out the psychological effects of abortion on performance, examine the role played by the university as a society in addressing the problem of abortion among students of Mount Kenya and suggest appropriate strategies that would help reduce abortion among female students. This research project was of great significance to the students, management and policy makers. This research was of great significance in that it added to the scanty information that was available on the factors contributing to student abortion. This will help identify specific mobilization campaigns and strategies by the university Administration, Management, and Policy makers to address this issue. This study used theory of knowledge by (Dagudo 2009). This theory examines the relationship that exists between thought and society. The study employed descriptive survey research design. Stratified random sampling was used to select the girls who had once procured an abortion and those who had not to be respondents in the study. A sample of 5 bachelor students and a sample of other 5 diploma students formed the respondent in this study. The Mount Kenya university counselor was purposely sampled. The study employed questionnaires and interview schedule as instruments for data collection .The validity of questionnaires was enhanced through piloting in two universities around Nairobi. Data was collected, cleaned and categorized manually. The researcher then transferred data collected to computer sheet and processed. The data was analyzed using pie charts and bar graphs for all items
