Investigating factors leading to drop out among female students in secondary schools in Khalalio zone of Khalalio District in Mandera county

Female students face a lot of challenges within the school and outside the school such as lack of school fees, examination pass marks and discrimination at home and in school, which lead to drop out from school. The study therefore wanted to establish the factors leading to drop out among female students in Khalalio Zone. The objectives of the study were to estimate the independent and dependent factors leading to students drop out of school. This researcher was of great significance in that it added to the scanty information that is available on the factors contributing to drop out of female students. This would help identify specific mobilization campaigns and strategies by the area education officials to address the situation. This study used liberal feminism and radical feminism theories by Fatuma & Sifuna, (2006). The liberal feminism bases their theory on the basis about natural justice, human right and democracy. They emphasize on equal opportunities in access in education and employment. This theory ensured the work remained within the stated objectives. The study employed descriptive survey research design. Stratified random sampling was used to select the boarding and mixed day schools where the girls sample was obtained from. A sample of 87 form four girls, 10 class teachers and 10 head teachers formed the respondent in this study. The Area Education Officer was purposefully sampled. The study employed questionnaires and interview schedule as instruments for data collection. The validity of the questionnaires was enhanced through pilot study in two schools outside Zone. Data collected was coded, cleaned and categorized manually. The researcher then transferred the data collected to computer sheet and processed by use of Statistical Package for Social Sciences. The data was analyzed using frequency distribution tables and percentages, for all items.
