The effect of poor parenting on academic performance in public primary schools in murang'a South sub county

Abstract

This study will be conceived in the realization that public primary schools in muranga sub county performs poorly in academics as reflected in the termly examinations and finally the end of year examination resulting to postage of the same performance in the national examination K.C.P.E. the purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of poor parenting in relation to the level of education, level of family economic background, level of parental support and parental marital problems on the academic performance of pupils in public primary schools in muranga south sub county. With an intention of recommending on how to improve pupils performance. The study will be conducted in this area because in the past decade the pupil’s performance has been alarmingly deteriorating. The study specifically intends to achieve the following objectives, the influence of the level of education of the parents towards poor parenting and thus poor performance; to investigate the influence of family income in relation to poor parenting and thus poor performance. To investigate the effect of marital problems on parenting and how it affects performance of pupils in public primary schools in muranga south sub county. The study will adopt a cross sectional survey research design. Quantitive and qualitative approaches of data collection will be employed. A total of 120 respondents will constitute the sample study. This will include 5 head teachers, 5 teachers, 100 pupils from class seven and 10 parents. 2 head teachers, 10 pupils, 2 parents and 2 teachers will be used for pilot study purpose in presenting instruments of data collection to ensure their validity and reliability. The research instruments to be employed will be questionnaires, interview schedules and observation. Data will be analyses using descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. The MOE and other stakeholders with interest in education may use the results to plan and design a professional development program for parents so as to ensure that pupils in public primary school perform well academically
