Determinants of academic performance in science subjects in Secondary schools in Kabati Division, Kitui West District, Kitui County,Kenya.

Abstract

This study determined the academic performance in science subjects of Secondary Schools in Kabati Division, Kitui West District and Kitui County Kenya. The study employed a descriptive survey method of investigation to determine the academic performance in science subjects in three Secondary Schools in kabati division. These schools include; 1 Kangungi secondary 2 Katheka boys secondary 3 Kyondoni girls’ secondary school 4 The study involved 80 students where 48 male and 32 female were involved in this study. The mean age of students considered was 18 years. 5 Data was collected from the respondents using the questionnaires and interview schedules. Reability of the instruments was measured using slip-half technique while the instruments were reviewed by the professional peers and supervisors to ensure validity. The data collected was edited, coded and analyzed using SPSS. The data obtained was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study found that Ministry of Education Science and Technology should employ more teachers so as to reduce student teacher ratio. Teachers should be sponsored for in-service courses in order to improve teaching methodology.
