Challenges Facing Teaching And Learning of English in Day Secondary School in Kirinyaga East Sub County, Kirinyaga County.

Abstract

This study was conceived on realization that day secondary schools performed below per in English in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education in Kirinyaga County. It set to find out factors affecting performance in day secondary schools. The input-output relationship or education production function was used. The researcher used stratified random sampling while questionnaires were used to collect data. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, multiple correlative and regressed analysis. The factors which may affect performance of English in Day schools in the county include: Mother tongue interference, lack of reading materials, chronic absenteeism, emanating from lack of school fees, inadequate instructional materials and physical activities, negative attitude towards the subject. Responses were elicited from students and teacher of four secondary schools in Kirinyaga County. The sample population was 200 in which 150 were students and 10 were teachers. Descriptive survey was used and questionnaires were used in collection of data.
