Effects of indiscipline on academic performance of secondary schools in Mutito Sub-county, Kitui county.
The purpose of the study was to find out the effects of indiscipline on academic performance on Secondary Schools in Mutito Sub County. This study used a survey research method, employing both questionnaires and interviews. The population consists of public secondary schools that have gone on strike and those which have not. According to 90% of the respondents, strikes negatively affected the academic performance of the students. A correlation was carried out to confirm the negative Relationship between students’ unrests and academic performance. Further, schools where Students went on strike showed higher variation in the mean grade when compared to schools where students had not gone on strike. The data clearly showed that strikes led to poor academic performance. The schools that was not been involved in unrests on average had more counselors than the schools that have unrests. This suggested that one of the solutions to the problem of indiscipline in public secondary schools was to strengthen counseling. Both the questionnaire used for data collection. The collected data was analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Studies done in Kenya show that access to sustainable and quality education in the country is characterized by inadequate teaching and learning materials in Secondary schools and Lack of trained teachers (MOEST POLICY 2006). The collected data was analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics using the statistical package for social scientist (SPSS). The study was expected to increase the efficiency of delivery services in the Mutito Subcounty and beyond. It is believed that the study was important in providing the education policy makers with the relevant basis for secondary programmes and to allocate adequate resources to improve the science performance including Physics in public schools. The study was also important in challenging the community to take education seriously and co-own the programmes in providing the best learning environment for quality Education and the role of teachers characteristics on the science subjects in Secondary schools
