An evaluation of slum life and its impact on academic perfomance in Korogocho slum in Nairobi County.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to establish the Evaluation of Slum Life and education in Korogocho slum in Nairobi Capital City. The specific objective were to establish the effects of extreme poverty in slums to education, to assess the activities/jobs people engage in to make their ends meet in slums and cause of rampant drug abuse and to assess influence of monitoring and evaluation of community development projects on urban slum dependency. Cluster, systematic and simple sampling method of sampling was used to select a sample size of 125 respondents. Potential participants were all staff members of the slum dwellers and student in slum schools selected following conditions: living in the slum; able to communicate in Kiswahili, English language. The method used for data collection was questionnaires to the staff members of the slum dwellers and student in slum schools to be involved in the study. The findings are presented and interpreted in relation to the study objectives and research objectives and research questions. The collected data was processed through data cleaning, interpretation of ambiguous statements and detection of contradicting data from related question. The analysis of data was analyzed using SPSS. In quantitative data, descriptive statistic such as frequencies, percentages and average were used to organize and summarize the numerical data. Qualitative data was coded by assigning numbers or symbols to variable categories. Data was presented in form of charts, graphs and tables.
