Drug abuse has become an increasing problem in Kenya. A number of studies carried out in the country show that many youths at particular time they had contact with various drugs. This research study dealt with causes of drug abuse in secondary schools, commonly abused drugs in secondary schools, effect of drug abuse on academic performance among secondary school students and ways of curbing drug abuse in Kenyan secondary schools. It was designed to help the MOE, education stakeholders, community or society, teachers and the student have know how on the topic of drug abuse and how to effectively deal with it. The study was based on the changing social systems theory, interracial theory and theory of personality advanced by Gilmer 1973. Chapter two dealt with a review of the related literature based on the research objectives which are causes of drug abuse in secondary schools, commonly abused drugs in secondary schools, effect of drug abuse in secondary schools and ways of curbing drug abuse in Kenyan secondary schools. The case study method was used where it involved the intensive study of a subject through observation in a particular setting. The study was located in Mwingi zone, Kitui County because the researcher comes from that region and it experiences drug abuse among secondary school students. Targeted population was 980 students and the sample size selected was 186 students. The researcher used purposive sampling method because it can be used with both qualitative and quantitative studies. Questionnaires was used as the research instruments on all respondents. Data collection will be collected through visiting all schools via an introduction letter and data analysis will be done through tables, bar graphs, line graphs, pyramids and pie charts.
