He studied at Busia Integrated Primary School, Busonga College, Mwiri and Makerere University and Kiev National Technology University. He is a holder of Ph.D degree in Architecture. He worked for Habitat Consultants before joining Makerere University in 1989 as a lecturer. Prof. Nawangwe is an accomplished scholar, researcher and administrator. He has supervised several Masters and Ph.D students, published articles in internationally reviewed journals, authored several research reports and presented numerous papers at local and international conferences. He has served as external examiner in several universities in Africa, Europe an Asia. Prof. Nawangwe served as Chairman of several Makerere University committees, including the University Research, Administrative and Financial Reforms Committee, Head of the Department of Architecture, Associate Dean, Faculty of Technology (2000-2002), Dean, Faculty of Technology (2003-2010), Ag. Principal, College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (2011-2013) and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Finance and Administration (2013-2017).
